The next Regular Meeting of the Board of Park Commissioners, of Mill Creek MetroParks is scheduled for Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at 6 p.m. in McMahon Hall, at the MetroParks Farm, on Rt. 46 in Canfield. The agenda will be available on the website after 2 p.m. on the day of the meeting.

Civil Air Patrol Training to take place in MetroParks

Civil Air Patrol (CAP) will be performing search and rescue training exercises on Saturday, October 6, 2018 in various Mill Creek MetroParks areas. Training will begin at approximately 8:30 a.m. at the Scholl Recreation Area, continuing on trails throughout the day, and will conclude at approximately 3:00 p.m. Members will be in uniform and will have a marked van in the park for these exercises.

Notice of MetroParks Standing Committee Meetings

The Environment Standing Committee to the Board of Park Commissioners of Mill Creek MetroParks will meet on Thursday, October 4, 2018, at 12 noon in Classroom A at the MetroParks Farm.

 

The Nature Education Standing Committee to the Board of Park Commissioners of Mill Creek MetroParks will meet on Thursday, October 4, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. in Classroom A at the MetroParks Farm.

Mill Creek MetroParks to present Pumpkin Walk at Twilight

Mill Creek MetroParks presents Pumpkin Walk at Twilight on Sunday, October 14 until 8 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens (123 McKinley Avenue, Youngstown, OH 44509). Take part in the wonders of the fall season as you walk along the Gardens’ pumpkin-lined paths as the day turns to night. Starting at 5:30 p.m., families can enjoy live entertainment by Grammy nominated folk artist Steve Free, refreshments, and children’s activities. This free event is open to the public and sponsored by 21 WFMJ/WBCB.

 On October 11, 12, and 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., have fun while helping carve pumpkins for display during Pumpkin Walk at Twilight. The carving area is located in the Service Building at Fellows Riverside Gardens which may be chilly, so dress according to the weather. Carving tools will be available or bring your own. Pumpkin carving will continue while pumpkin supplies last and carved pumpkins cannot be taken with you before, during, or after the event – they are to be displayed at the Pumpkin Walk event. Groups of 10 or more should call ahead. This event is also free and open to the public of all ages.

Mill Creek MetroParks Road Closures

The following roads in Mill Creek Park will be closed to vehicular traffic as well as cyclists and pedestrians from approximately 7:00 a. m. until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 29, 2018 for the Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk:

• Cross Drive

• West Drive

 

The following roads in Mill Creek Park will be closed to vehicular traffic as well as cyclists and pedestrians from approximately 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 30, 2018 for the Kool Boiz Foundation 5K:

 

• Bears Den Drive

• Cross Drive

• West Drive

• New Cross Drive

 

Always use caution when driving on MetroParks roads as many of these roads are also used by pedestrians and bicyclists. Pedestrians and bicyclists should be reminded to also use caution and be aware of vehicular traffic when on these roads. Mill Creek MetroParks presents Sunset at the Farm

Mill Creek MetroParks presents Sunset at the Farm to be held at the MetroParks Farm (7574 Columbiana-Canfield Rd., Canfield, OH 44406) on Saturday, September 22 from 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Join us as we watch the sun set on the horizon and enjoy the late summer atmosphere at the Farm. Enjoy folk music while roasting marshmallows over the campfire, explore the animal barns or find your way through a corn maze. Watch cider and homemade apple butter demonstrations along with a free sample. Join in playing old-time games or take a tractor-drawn wagon hay ride. Pony rides, face painting, and refreshments will be available for a small fee.

AJGA Tournament at Mill Creek Golf Course a Financial Success for Mahoning Valley

The Mahoning Valley Hospital Foundation’s American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Junior All-Star Event took place the week of June 17, 2018 at Mill Creek Golf Course. The tournament hosted 124 junior competitors, including seven junior players who earned their spot in a Sunday regional qualifying event from a field of 100 players. Over 100 volunteers, 34 college coaches from all over the United States, and a dozen staff and interns from the AJGA were also in attendance at the 2018 tournament.

The AJGA tournament had an economic impact in the Mahoning Valley of $414,717.00 in 2018 and a three year total of $1,128,014.00 since its inception in 2016. This impact includes lodging for families and AJGA representatives, rental cars, dining and entertainment spending. In addition, a $12,000 donation was made to Mill Creek MetroParks Foundation and AJGA Ace Grant which came from monies raised for the AJGA tournament and Junior-Amateur event held on the Monday prior to the main event. Sophie Linder of Carthage, TN was the female champion with scores of 72, 69, and 68 coming in one under par. Aidan Tran of Fresno, CA was the male champion with scores of 68, 67, and 65 setting a new tournament scoring record of ten under par.

Mill Creek MetroParks Golf Course, AJGA, and title sponsor The Mahoning Valley Hospital Foundation, are currently under contract through 2021 to ensure the event stays in the Mahoning Valley and state of Ohio.
