Learn how stream life and physical characteristics of creeks are indicators of water quality while collecting data. We’ll get our feet wet while observing and photographing insects and macroinvertebrates that can then be used to assess water quality. Participants will also learn about QHEI, a method used for assessing habitat for headwater streams like Saw Mill Run.

To give you an example of a few activities we might do on our hike:

-catch, photograph and release insects & macroinvertebrates

-walk sections along the creek while filling out a score sheet that assesses the quality of the habitat

-photograph and record fish and plant species that are in the creek

-Use water quality monitoring equipment to record physical parameters that are relevant to water quality

All the information and data gathered will be utilized by Mill Creek MetroParks and uploaded to iNaturalist, a fun and interactive website/App that connects everyday people to researchers and their projects locally, regionally and internationally. The iNaturalist App only requires that you take some identifying photos of plants, animals, or insects and then upload them via phone or computer.
