2019 Summer Discovery Camps at Mill Creek MetroParks

Give your child the gift of exploration and excitement with a week of Summer Discovery Camp at Mill Creek MetroParks. The Summer Discovery Camps provide children, ages 5 -12, with the freedom to discover and experience the outdoors in a safe and fun environment. Our summer camps encourage curiosity, exploration, and investigation that can lead to a greater understanding of the natural world and a lifelong appreciation for our environment. With small group sizes, your camper receives a quality and positive outdoor experience, plus memories that will last a lifetime.

To register you may download a copy of the registration form, or call or stop by Fellows Riverside Gardens, 330.740.7116, to pick one up. Payment, plus completed forms need to be submitted to the Fellows Riverside Gardens one week in advance of your summer camp, see individual camp deadlines. Space is limited. You will receive a confirmation after your registration is complete.

Park Pals

Ages 5-6 / Fee: $80 R; $92 NR

Where the Critters Are – FULL

6/10 – 6/14 | 9 am – 1 pm

Various MCMP Locations

Ages 5-6. Do you like to pretend to fly like a bird, chew like a beaver, or buzz like a bee? Do you wonder where critters live and what they do all day? Then this camp is for you! Each day is a new adventure as we become different animals and explore their worlds. We’ll get up close and personal with various critters and go on hikes and hunts. A Lake Glacier passenger boat ride, crafts, games and nature play are all part of the fun. Bring your imagination! Register/pay by 6/4.

Wild Heroes – 4 Spots Left

8/5 – 8/9 | 9 am – 1 pm

Various MCMP Locations

Ages 5-6. It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no it’s Super You! Come out to Mill Creek MetroParks and become a Wild Hero. We will learn about our superpowered wild friends that live right here in the park and how they use their superpowers to survive. Then at the end of the week we will transform into our own Wild Heroes and test our skills on the Eco Obstacle Course. Register/pay by 7/30.

Explorers

Extreme Science – FULL

6/17 – 6/21 | 9 am – 4 pm

Birch Hill Cabin and Lanterman’s Mill

Ages 7-9. Do you love experiments, rockets, slime, and all things science? Grab your lab coat and a beaker and join Mill Creek MetroParks for one extremely scientific week at our Extreme Science Camp. This week will be full of extreme experiments, spaghetti bridges, magnetic slime, critter catches, artificial lightning, and so many more scientific activities along the way. Your scientist in training will be EXTREMELY excited about this camp! Register/pay by 6/11.

Kitchen Chemist –  FULL

7/15 – 7/19 | 9 am – 4 pm

MetroParks Farm

Ages 7-9. Become a Kitchen Chemist! Explore where our food comes from at the MetroParks Farm and make your own daily yummy snacks. Answer questions along the way: Why does popcorn pop? Why do onions make me cry? Why does bread rise? How can I stop my apple from turning brown? Work each day on a part or ingredient for assembling our homemade pizza to enjoy as a treat the last day of camp. Come prepared to do some experiments, taste tests foods, along with crafts, games, songs, and hikes.Register/pay by 7/9.

Trekkers

Ages 10-12 / Fee: $126 R; $140 NR

Herbology & Potions – FULL

6/24 – 6/28 | 9 am – 4 pm

Fellows Riverside Gardens

Ages 10-12. Park your brooms at the door and line-up for a week filled with magic and mischief at Mill Creek MetroParks. Inspired by Harry Potter, campers will develop skills with botany in Herbology class and chemistry in Potions class. Get your hands dirty learning everything about plants: identification, the benefits of, and how to communicate with them. Wizard activities include wand-making, herbal concoctions, making butterbeer, and garden explorations. Register/pay by 6/18.

Naturalist Boot Camp – 6 Spots Left

7/22 – 7/26 | 9 am – 4 pm

Various MCMP Locations

Ages 10-12. Do you think you have what it takes to be a Nature Cadet? Join the mission and grow your skills during this in the field training program. Build the perfect team. Immerse yourself in your surroundings with all five senses. Develop in-depth investigations of Mill Creek MetroParks habitats. Challenge yourself to build the perfect plant. Hone your animal instincts. Perfect your survival skills. We will do this and more, all the while playing games, enjoying nature, and having fun.​ Register/pay by 7/16.

Sibling Discount

If more than one sibling will attend, complete separate registration and emergency/medical forms for each child. Payment, plus completed forms need to be submitted to the Fellows Riverside Gardens by individual camp deadlines. 15% off the second sibling registration – discount applies to the second registration of equal or lesser value when payment and registration is made for each sibling at the same time.

Attire

  • Dress for the weather!
  • Wear clothes that are comfortable for outdoor and indoor activities and hands-on, messy fun.
  • Comfortable, closed-toe shoes
  • Extra shoes for water activities
  • Poncho or rain jacket – we play in the rain!

What to Bring to Camp

  • A reusable water bottle
  • A nut-free lunch and snacks that do not require refrigeration.
  • A backpack with a change of clothes and to carry projects home.
  • Sunscreen and insect repellant – best if applied prior to the start of the camp day.
  • Hat (optional)
  • Any medications necessary during the program (i.e., inhaler, Epi-Pen, etc.)

What Not to Bring to Camp

  • Campers are encouraged to leave all electronic devices at home.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations less than two weeks prior to the summer camp are non-refundable. Cancellations less than four weeks, but before the two week deadline will have a 10% cancellation fee. Cancellations made four weeks prior will receive a full refund. Summer camps are held rain or shine. A full refund will be issued if the summer camp is cancelled by Mill Creek MetroParks.

Dedicated Staff

Staff are experienced educators, who are passionate and dedicated to giving your child a positive and safe experience in the outdoors. All staff members participate in annual training, are first-aid certified, certified interpretive guides, and love teaching children.

Facility Information

Mill Creek MetroParks offers unique and amazing outdoor opportunities for your child from the 45 miles of trails to well-known facilities, like the MetroParks Farm and Fellows Riverside Gardens, to hidden natural gems at the nature preserves to iconic structures, such as Lanterman’s Mill.

Summer camps will be held at various Mill Creek MetroParks locations during the week. Some dates may have a different drop-off or pick-up location. For more details, please contact Fellows Riverside Gardens at 330.740.7116. Activities are held both outdoors and indoors.
