Fellows Riverside Gardens presents Vanishing Acts exhibit

(Youngstown, Ohio) Mill Creek MetroParks Fellows Riverside Gardens presents Vanishing Acts: Trees Under Threat, a large outdoor exhibit on display now through October 31.Vanishing Acts takes a compelling look at the precarious plight of the world’s trees and what that means to our everyday lives. The self-guided exhibit begins at the D.D. and Velma Davis Education & Visitor Center and continues throughout the Gardens. Discovery backpacks with activities related to the exhibit and trees are available for families to check out at the Information Desk. Admission is free.

The word “extinction” is closely associated with animals like polar bears and giant pandas, yet approximately 10% of known tree species are at risk of disappearing forever. This exhibit brings to light the importance of trees to our lives as food, fuel, timber, medicine, and more. Within an ecosystem, trees are integral foundations for habitat resources – food, shelter, space, etc. Loss of a tree species has a ripple effect on many other species. The exhibit highlights 15 threatened tree species, selected for their ability to show us the diversity of threats facing trees today, the global nature of tree extinction, and the range of threats that all trees may face one day.

The exhibit was developed by the Morton Arboretum in partnership with the Global Trees Campaign and supported by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, the John and Doris Andrews Education Endowment, and Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens.
