Mill Creek MetroParks is committed to protecting native wildlife populations and maintaining the ecological health of our natural areas. In some cases, certain meso-predator species—such as raccoons—can become overpopulated in sensitive habitats. Elevated predator numbers can put significant pressure on vulnerable species, including turtles and ground-nesting birds, and may disrupt the ecological balance of these areas.
Our meso-predator management efforts are designed to be science-based, humane, and conducted in accordance with state and federal wildlife regulations. This work includes targeted trapping in select areas where monitoring shows overpopulation and high predation risk. Population surveys and trail camera monitoring conducted by MetroParks staff, along with USDA reports, help guide and evaluate these management actions.
By responsibly managing meso-predator populations, Mill Creek MetroParks aims to protect biodiversity, support the recovery of sensitive species, and ensure that our natural areas continue to thrive for both wildlife and people.
