Mill Creek MetroParks is committed to preserving the natural beauty, ecological balance, and enjoyable experience of our park for all visitors. As part of that commitment, we actively manage the population of Canada geese throughout the park district. While these birds are a natural part of our environment, large populations can lead to challenges such as habitat degradation, water quality concerns, and safety or accessibility issues on trails and recreational areas.

Our goose management efforts are designed to be humane, environmentally responsible, and in accordance with state and federal wildlife regulations. Through a combination of habitat modification, population control, and public education, we strive to maintain a healthy balance between wildlife and public use of the MetroParks.

AVIAN INFLUENZA (BIRD FLU)
VISITOR ADVISORY

February 23, 2026 – Mill Creek MetroParks is aware that the United States is currently experiencing a widespread outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) affecting wild birds. While the disease primarily impacts birds — including species such as Canada geese — it can occasionally affect mammals, including humans. At this time, the current public health risk remains low.

  • WHAT TO DO IF YOU SEE A SICK OR DEAD BIRD

To help protect visitors, staff, and wildlife, please follow these guidelines:

    • Keep a safe distance.
    • Do NOT touch or attempt to move the bird.
    • MetroParks personnel will safely remove and dispose of carcasses and report cases to state wildlife officials.
    REPORTING INFORMATION

To prevent duplicate reports, visitors are asked not to report individual dead birds found within the MetroParks to the Division of Wildlife or other agency officials.

Instead, please direct all reports to the MetroParks’ Natural Resources Manager (click on the “Report a Sighting” button below):

  • IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Wildlife rehabilitation facilities are not accepting birds suspected of avian influenza. In these situations, it is unfortunately necessary to allow the disease to run its natural course.
