Mill Creek MetroParks acquires 161 acres in Smith Township

Mill Creek MetroParks has acquired 161 acres on West Western Reserve Road in Smith Township. The MetroParks partnered with West Creek Conservancy to acquire the land, known as Hawkins Marsh, with funds obtained through the Clean Ohio Conservation Fund, which provided $843,800 of the $1.1 million cost. The remaining $299,730 came in the form of a bargain sale, a news release states. The land consists of “unique natural habitats,” including wetlands, the release states. Recreational opportunities are being planned for the property.

“Once again, we are thrilled to be able to announce this most recent acquisition thanks to the dedicated efforts of MetroParks staff, our partners at West Creek Conservancy and financial support from the Clean Ohio Conservation Fund,” Aaron Young, executive director of Mill Creek MetroParks, said in the release. “The acquisition of this unique property is another step forward in the mission of the MetroParks serving the needs of all of Mahoning County,” Young said.

Mill Creek MetroParks Continues Expansion to Better Serve Mahoning County

Thanks to another successful grant application to the Clean Ohio Conservation Fund, Mill Creek MetroParks has expanded its presence into another previously under-served area of Mahoning County and places the MetroParks at more than 5,000 total acres.

The MetroParks has acquired 161 acres, located in Smith Township on W. Western Reserve Road, known as Hawkins Marsh.The MetroParks partnered with West Creek Conservancy in the acquisition of the property that consists of a variety of unique natural habitats including critically important wetlands. The Clean Ohio Conservation Fund provided 74% or $843,800.00 of the $1,143,530.00 total project cost, with the remaining 26% or $299,730 in the form of a bargain sale. Future improvements are currently being planned for the property and due to parameters associated with the Clean Ohio Conservation Fund Program, will be limited to passive recreation opportunities.

Mill Creek Golf Course to Open for the 2022 Golf Season

The North Course and Pro Shop at Mill Creek Golf Course will open for the 2022 season at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 30, 2022. Hole #55 Bar & Grille will follow shortly after with an opening date of Friday, April 1, 2022. The opening date for the South Course is scheduled for Monday, April 11, 2022, with the Driving Range & Practice Facility opening on Monday, April 18, 2022.  Mill Creek Golf Course hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, 7:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.

The James L. Wick, Jr. Recreation Area Par-3 Golf Course and batting cages are scheduled to open on Friday, April 1, 2022. In addition, the tennis courts and sand volleyball courts also located at Wick Recreation Area will open on Friday, April 1, 2022. Wick Recreation Area hours are 8:00 a.m. – Sunset, with lighted night hours Fridays and Saturdays from 8:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. beginning May 1, 2022.
