Mill Creek MetroParks presents Sunset at the Farm

Mill Creek MetroParks presents Sunset at the Farm to be held at the MetroParks Farm (7574 Columbiana-Canfield Rd., Canfield, OH 44406) on Saturday, September 23 from 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public and sponsored by WKBN 27 First News. 

Join us as we watch the sun set on the horizon and enjoy the late summer atmosphere at the Farm. Enjoy folk music while roasting marshmallows over the campfire, explore the animal barns or find your way through a corn maze. Watch cider and homemade apple butter demonstrations along with a free sample. Join in playing old-time games or take a tractor-drawn wagon hay ride and so much more!

Pony rides, face painting, and refreshments will be available for a small fee. For more information, please call Ford Nature Center at 330.740.7107.

Days and times set for upcoming Mill Creek MetroParks standing committee meetings

The nature education standing committee to the Mill Creek MetroParks board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The finance standing committee will meet at 10 a.m. next Saturday.

The wildlife standing committee will meet at 2 p.m. Sept. 19; the community engagement standing committee will meet at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 22; and the development standing committee will meet at 4 p.m. Sept. 22.

All meetings take place in Classroom A at the MetroParks Farm, 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road.

The Finance Standing Committee to the Board of Park Commissioners, of Mill Creek MetroParks will meet on Saturday, September 16, at 10 a.m., in Classroom A at the MetroParks Farm in Canfield.

Mill Creek MetroParks Road Closures

There will be multiple road closures throughout Mill Creek MetroParks this weekend due to the YMCA Community Cup and The Green Cathedral Half-Marathon and 5K.

The following roads will be closed to vehicular traffic as well as cyclists and pedestrians from approximately 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2017 for the YMCA Community Cup: 

• West Glacier Drive

• West Drive

• Bears Den Drive

• New Cross Drive

• Cross Drive

• West Cohasset Drive

• High Drive

• Chestnut Hill Drive

• Valley Drive

The following roads will be closed to vehicular traffic as well as cyclists and pedestrians from approximately 6 a.m. until Noon on Sunday, September 10, 2017 for the Green Cathedral Half-Marathon and 5K:

• Bears Den Drive

• Cross Drive

• New Cross Drive

• Lily Pond Drive

• West Drive

• West Glacier Drive

• East Park Drive

• Valley Drive

• Chestnut Hill Drive

• High Drive

• West Cohasset Drive

Always use caution when driving on MetroParks roads as many of these roads are also used by pedestrians and bicyclists. Pedestrians and bicyclists should be reminded to also use caution and be aware of vehicular traffic when on these roads.

Improvements to Volney Rogers Field officially complete

As part of the MetroParks’ improvement initiative, Mill Creek MetroParks has announced the completion of improvements made at Volney Rogers Field.

The primary improvement made to the field was a resurfacing of the tennis and basketball courts.

This was completed by Penn-Ohio Sealing and contains a new asphalt overlay, an acrylic playing surface and court lines on six tennis courts and one basketball court.

Two pickleball courts have been added to the tennis courts to address the demand for the sport.

The basketball hoop backboards, rims, and hardware have been replaced, along with the tennis backstop.

A new section of asphalt trail accessing the basketball courts has been constructed.

The cost of the overall project was approximately $110,000.

The facility is now open for play.

Green Cathedral Race set to run Sunday

Mill Creek Metroparks will host the fifth annual Green Cathedral race Sunday. The race will begin and end in the Wick Recreation Area at 1861 McCollum Road.

The Kids Fun Run begins at 8 a.m.; the half-marathon begins at 8:30; and the 5K Run/Walk begins at 8:45 a.m.

This event is open to all ages and abilities, and awards will be given according to age groups. The Kids Fun Run is free, and children will receive participation awards.

Early-bird registration was Aug. 27. the half-marathon is now $40. The 5K Run/Walk is now $30.

The Green Cathedral Race is sponsored by 21 WFMJ/WBCB, and all proceeds will benefit the Juliana Kurinka children’s play area at the Wick Recreational Area.

Completion of Capital Improvement Project at Volney Rogers Field

As part of the MetroParks’ ongoing capital improvement initiative, Mill Creek MetroParks is pleased to announce the completion of improvements made at Volney Rogers Field. The primary improvement consists of resurfacing of the tennis and basketball courts. The court resurfacing project, completed by Penn-Ohio Sealing, features a new asphalt overlay, acrylic playing surface, and court lines on the existing six (6) tennis courts and one (1) basketball court. New green and blue surfacing has given the courts a more contemporary look. Also, two pickleball courts have been added to the tennis courts to address the demand for the increasingly popular sport. 

 Additionally, the basketball hoop backboards, rims, and hardware have been replaced, and the tennis backstop / practice wall has new wood facing. A new section of asphalt trail accessing the basketball courts has been constructed, and a preventive maintenance project that included sealing, crack-filling and asphalt patching of the lower parking lot and existing asphalt trails has been completed. Overgrown vegetation has been removed around the court areas and an improved section of the East Glacier Trail features new signage and is now accessible from the facility.

The facility is currently open for play. In total, the cost of the improvements is approximately $110,000.
