Mill Creek MetroParks presents Winter Celebration: The Magical Woods

Beginning November 30 through December 29, 2019 the D.D. and Velma Davis Education & Visitor Center will be adorned for the annual Winter Celebration event, which is a family-friendly, admission-free event sponsored by WKBN 27 First News. This year’s theme, “The Magical Woods”, takes you to a magical land of fairy families throughout the Davis Center lobby, and discover other mystical creatures in The Enchanted Hollow. Visitors will also be able to participate in a scavenger hunt, and of course, the views of beautiful seasonal flowers on display. The annual tree walk will also be on display throughout the Davis Center where over 50 non-profit organizations display their uniquely decorated trees. Visitors can experience The Magical Woods Tuesdays – Sundays from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

 

Every Saturday from November 30 – December 28, the Gardens will be open until 7 p.m. for guests to experience Winter Nights featuring an outdoor light display highlighting winter’s beauty. Inside the Davis Center you will find Unicorn Games and crafts along with live holiday music by local musicians. Plus, find that perfect gift at the Shop in the Gardens and savor refreshments available for purchase in the Garden Cafe.

 

In the spirit of giving, non-perishable food item donations are being accepted for the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley.

Spend Your Holiday Weekend in Mill Creek MetroParks

Kick off your holiday weekend with the Black Friday Sale at the Mill Creek Golf Course Golf Shop on Friday, November 29, 2019. Stop in from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. to purchase your favorite golfer something special for next season.

On Saturday, November 30 and Sunday, December 1 from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. visit Lanterman’s Mill for Olde Fashioned Christmas at Lanterman’s Mill. Sponsored by 21 WFMJ/WBCB, guests will be able to see Lanterman’s Mill dressed in holiday finery for this traditional, family-friendly, free event. Taste chestnuts roasted on an open fire, watch artisans demonstrate old fashioned crafts, purchase unique handcrafted gifts, and enjoy festive entertainment. To share the holiday spirit with others, bring a new hat, scarf, or pair of mittens to decorate a “Giving Tree.” Donated items will warm up children in need this winter.

On Sunday, December 1 head over to the MetroParks Farm for Santa’s Winter Barn from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Santa will make an appearance with some of his animal friends from around the world as he gets his reindeer ready for that big night. Come sit in his sleigh for a holiday picture and make a holiday craft to take home. The family-friendly free event is held in the unheated barn, so please dress for the weather. There is a $1 cash only fee for the children’s holiday craft.

Historical Society Photographs Displayed in Weller Gallery

Mill Creek MetroParks presents “Hidden Gems from the Mahoning Valley Historical Society” which is currently on display in the Weller Gallery at Fellows Riverside Gardens. This exhibit showcases 19th and 20th Century photographs from the archives of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society. These images feature breathtaking, snow-covered landscapes, downtown Youngstown decked for the holidays, people enjoying winter pastimes, and more.

 

This free exhibit will be displayed through January 5, 2020 during normal operating hours of Tuesday – Sunday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., closed Mondays. A Meet the Curator session will take place on December 7 from 5 – 7 pm in the Weller Gallery at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Take this opportunity to meet Curator, Jessica Trickett.

Bikeway to Close for Improvement Project

Beginning Wednesday, October 23, 2019 a two-mile section of the MetroParks Bikeway is scheduled to temporarily close for a pavement repair and asphalt resurfacing project. The project will address poor pavement conditions by repairing cracks, planing and excavating uneven pavement, and installing a new course of asphalt pavement.

 

The section of Bikeway in Canfield Township between Western Reserve Road and SR 446 will close for approximately one week. Access to the Bikeway from Western Reserve Road, Leffingwell Road, SR 446, and the MetroParks Farm Trailhead will be prohibited for the entire duration of the project. In the event of inclement weather, the work schedule may be adjusted causing delays to the start or completion of the project.

Mill Creek MetroParks to present Pumpkin Walk at Twilight

Mill Creek MetroParks presents Pumpkin Walk at Twilight on Sunday, October 13, 2019 until 8 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens (123 McKinley Avenue, Youngstown, OH 44509). Take part in the wonders of the fall season as you walk along the Gardens’ pumpkin-lined paths as the day turns to night. Starting at 5:30 p.m., families can enjoy live entertainment by Grammy nominated folk artist Steve Free, refreshments, and children’s activities. This free event is open to the public and sponsored by 21 WFMJ/WBCB.

On October 10, 11, and 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., have fun while helping carve family-friendly pumpkins to be displayed during Pumpkin Walk at Twilight. The carving area is located in the Service Building at Fellows Riverside Gardens which may be chilly, so dress according to the weather. Pumpkins and carving tools will be supplied. Carving will continue while pumpkin supplies last and carved pumpkins cannot be taken with you before, during, or after the event – they are to be displayed at the Pumpkin Walk event. Groups of 10 or more should call ahead. This event is also free and open to the public of all ages.

Drive Closures in Mill Creek Park

East Park Drive and Valley Drive in Mill Creek Park will be closed to all vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle traffic beginning Friday, September 27, 2019 for a construction improvement project. Work on the project is expected to be completed and the drives reopened in mid-October. Access to the Suspension Bridge and the Flats area will be maintained from the north by route of West Cohasset Drive. Access to Lanterman’s Mill parking lot will be maintained as much as possible during this time-frame, but based on specific construction activities, there will be periods of time when the parking lot will also be totally closed. During those time-frames, public parking for Lanterman’s Mill should be in the parking lots on West Newport Drive.

 

In the event of inclement weather, the work might be delayed and the schedule adjusted accordingly.
