Subject connected to graffiti in MCMP

Yesterday, Mill Creek MetroParks Police successful executed an arrest warrant in connection to recent incidents of offensive and anti-Semitic graffiti found in various locations around Mill Creek MetroParks throughout the last week. The subject, identified with the help of witnesses, is Scott Spencer. Spencer is 25 years of age and resides in Boardman. Spencer was charged with Ethnic Intimidation and Criminal Mischief in connection to the graffiti. He was arrested and will be in Boardman Court on September 27, 2016.

Mill Creek MetroParks Police would like to thank the park patrons who have reported the graffiti over the past week and those who assisted in identifying the suspect.

Mill Creek MetroParks Road Closures

The following roads in Mill Creek MetroParks will be closed to vehicular traffic as well as cyclists and pedestrians from approximately 7 a.m. until Noon on Sunday, September 25, 2016 for the M.S. Super Walk:

• West Drive
• Bears Den Drive
• New Cross Drive
• Cross Drive

Always use caution when driving on MetroParks roads as many of these roads are also used by pedestrians and bicyclists. Pedestrians and bicyclists should be reminded to also use caution and be aware of vehicular traffic when on these roads. Kravitz’s Garden Café & Inspired Catering opens at Fellows Riverside Gardens

Kravitz’s Garden Café & Inspired Catering in Mill Creek MetroParks Fellows Riverside Gardens has officially opened for business. Kravitz will offer a wide array of selections which include appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, milk shakes, smoothies, vegetarian, vegan and gluten free choices, and a kids menu to satisfy the smallest of eaters. All served with a complimentary view of stunning Lake Glacier. Kravitz’s Garden Café will also be the exclusive caterer for the D.D. and Velma Davis Education & Visitor Center. “We are very excited to expand our relationship with Kravitz Delicatessen. Collaborations between local, private businesses continue to provide a cost effective way for Mill Creek MetroParks to provide the recreation and services residents are looking for from us,” says Mill Creek MetroParks Executive Director Aaron Young”. “The Kravitz family of services has a long relationship with Mill Creek MetroParks as one of the preferred caterers. Kravitz Delicatessen was established in 1939 by founder Rose Kravitz on the Northside of Youngstown, Ohio. It is now owned by Rose’s son, Jack Kravitz. “I am very excited to be in the Garden Café and the exclusive caterer for Mill Creek MetroParks. Lanterman’s Mill will close to the Public on Thursday

Lanterman’s Mill will be closed on Thursday, September 22 for asphalt pavement preventative maintenance work.  This work will include areas immediately around the mill and the covered bridge. Lanterman’s Mill will reopen to the public Friday, September 23 with regular hours of operation.

Autumn Plant Sale at Fellows Riverside Gardens

Visit Fellows Riverside Gardens for the Annual Autumn Plant Sale to purchase pumpkins, chrysanthemums, and a large variety of fall perennials.  The sale runs Saturday, September 24 from 10 am – 5 pm & Sunday, September 25 from Noon – 5 pm. Sponsored by Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens

Mill Creek MetroParks Parking Lot Closures

Multiple parking lots and asphalt surfaces throughout Mill Creek Park will be temporarily closed for the MetroParks annual asphalt sealing and preventive maintenance project.  The work is scheduled to begin on Monday, September 19, and will continue for approximately two weeks.  Lots will be closed for several days, and will reopen once vehicular traffic is permitted. Several of the prominent lots and surfaces scheduled for work include the following:

·         Ford Nature Center
·         Lanterman’s Mill (Mill and Covered Bridge Area)
·         Newport Trail Link
·         Mill Creek Golf Course (North)
·         East Newport Boat Launch. 

Several minor lots along East Newport Drive, New Cross Drive, and Bears Den Drive will also be affected.  While the lots are closed, the facilities they support will remain open and accessible for public use.  Rentals and scheduled programming will not be impacted by this project.  Please use alternate parking lots to access these facilities when lots are closed. 

In the event of inclement weather, the work schedule will be delayed and adjusted accordingly.

Mill Creek MetroParks Road Closure

On Saturday, September 17, 2016, Price Road near the Old Log Cabin in Mill Creek MetroParks will be experiencing brief, periodic closings to vehicular traffic as well as cyclists and pedestrians from approximately 10:00 am to 2:00 pm for the YUTC Ultra Trail Run.  During this time, the entrance to Fellows Riverside Gardens on Price Road will remain open.

Sunset at the Farm

Mill Creek MetroParks presents Sunset at the Farm to be held at the MetroParks Farm (7574 Columbiana-Canfield Rd., Canfield, OH 44406) on Saturday, September 24 from 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.  This event is free and open to the public and sponsored by WKBN First News 27.

Join us as we watch the sun set on the horizon and enjoy the late summer atmosphere at the Farm. Enjoy folk music while roasting marshmallows over the campfire, explore the animal barns or find your way through a corn maze.  Watch cider and homemade apple butter demonstrations along with a free sample.  Join in playing old-time games or take a tractor-drawn wagon hay ride and so much more!

Gardens Director Visits Costa Rica with Miami University Biology Program

Mill Creek MetroParks Fellows Riverside Gardens Director, Andrew Pratt recently returned from a research trip in Costa Rica where he examined the flora and fauna of the country along with 16 other fellow graduate students in his biology program through Miami University (Project Dragonfly).

During his time there, Andrew focused on documenting the many different orchid species unique to niche ecosystems within the country.  Additionally he worked with his group to plant over 100 trees at a cloud forest school in Monteverde.  Andrew also spent time propagating and planting native plants at a botanical garden and even brushed up on his Spanish a bit!  He hopes to use his experience to refine the annual orchid show at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

Andrew was awarded and supported by The Garden Club of America’s, Katharine M. Grosscup Scholarship in Horticulture, a prestigious academic-based horticulture scholarship awarded to select rising college sophomores, juniors, seniors and master degree students majoring in horticulture or related fields at academic institutions.

Mill Creek MetroParks presents Old-Fashioned Fun at Lanterman’s Mill

Join us for some old-fashioned fun for ALL ages at Lanterman’s Mill on Saturday, September 17 from 10 am – 2 pm. Try out activities and games from a past era.  Create a craft to take home. Tour Lanterman’s Mill, one of the few remaining water-powered grist mills, to see how things were done in the 1800’s. Enjoy live entertainment with One String Short. Watch demonstrations including: Roundtable Wood Carvers Club, Village Quilts from Canfield, Knitting & Yarn Spinning, Melnick Medical Museum, Mahoning Valley Historical Society, Herb Table, and so much more!
