Notice of August Board Meetings

The next Regular Meeting of the Board of Park Commissioners of Mill Creek MetroParks has been changed to Monday, August 15 at 6 p.m. at the MetroParks Farm (7574 Columbiana-Canfield Rd., Canfield, OH 44406). The agenda will be available after 2 p.m. on the day of the meeting by visiting www.millcreekmetroparks.org/publicinformation.

On Monday, August 1 at 5:00 p.m. there will be a Special Meeting of the Board of Park Commissioners of Mill Creek MetroParks for a tour of properties and facilities. The tour will be conducted by Mill Creek MetroParks staff and will take place on the Cohasset Express, the park’s trolley. The only agenda item for the meeting is the tour and no decisions will be voted on at the August 1 meeting.

Fellows Riverside Gardens will close to the Public on Friday Afternoon

The Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens and staff of Fellows Riverside Gardens at Mill Creek MetroParks are preparing to celebrate the 25th annual Summer Garden Party on Friday, July 29, 2016. In preparation for the event Fellows Riverside Gardens will be closed to the public starting at 3:00 p.m. The gardens will reopen to the public Saturday, July 30 with regular hours of operation.

Mill Creek MetroParks Road Closures

Beginning on July 11, 2016 Memorial Hill Drive and East Glacier Drive in Mill Creek Park will be closed to vehicular traffic, as well as cyclists and pedestrians, for improvements and resurfacing. Memorial Hill Drive will be closed from Glenwood Avenue to West Glacier Drive. East Glacier will be closed starting at Memorial Hill Drive and continue to Lower Volney Rogers Field. Lower Volney Rogers Field will still be accessible throughout the project using East Glacier Drive from Glenwood Avenue. The roads will reopen when the project is completed in late – September of this year.

AJGA Tournament Huge Success for Valley

The Mill Creek MetroParks Foundation American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Junior All-Star Event took place the week of June 19 at Mill Creek Golf Course. The tournament hosted 96 junior competitors, including four local teens who earned their spot in a May Mill Creek MetroParks qualifying event, 128 volunteers, recruiting colleges from as far as Wisconsin, and over a dozen staff and interns from the AJGA.

The AJGA estimates the tournament had an economic impact in the Mahoning Valley of between $200,000 and $209,000. This includes hotels room for families and AJGA representatives, rental cars, and dining and entertainment spending. Not included in that number is the donation of $10,000 Mill Creek MetroParks Foundation received. This gift came from the funds raised for the event. Local sponsors included the Mahoning County Convention and Visitor Bureau and Mill Creek MetroParks Foundation.

All of the tournament participants played exceptionally well however at the end of the three days of play two were named the tournament champions. Reese Guzman of Kahilui, HI was the female champion with scores of 67, 68, and 69 coming in six under par. Maxwell Moldovan of Uniontown, OH earned his spot in his first AJGA Tournament in the Sunday AJGA qualifier. He ended up the male champions with scores of 68, 68, and 66 coming in eight under par.

Mill Creek MetroParks and the AJGA have already begun talks for a 2017 tournament.

The AJGA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. AJGA Alumni include the likes of: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Paula Creamer, Stacy Lewis, Rickie Fowler, Jordan Speith, Lexi Thompson and Sergio Garcia.

This Saturday is Garden Adventure Day to Fellows Riverside Gardens

Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek MetroParks will be holding Garden Adventure Day on Saturday, June 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is a family-fun activity that begins in the Family Garden. This year’s theme is “Dig Into Gardening”. The whole family can follow the activity map throughout the Gardens for fun crafts, activities, and performances. Garden Adventure Day activities include a drum circle, mini-yoga sessions, scavenger hunt, plant and name your own Dahlia and much more. This event is rain or Shine and free to attend.

Mill Creek MetroParks Road Closures

The following roads in Mill Creek MetroParks will be closed to vehicular traffic as well as cyclists and pedestrians from approximately 7 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 28, 2016 for the YMCA Memorial 5 Mile Run:

  • East Glacier Drive
  • Memorial Hill Drive
  • West Glacier Drive
  • Price Road

During this time, the Price Road entrance to Fellows Riverside Gardens will be closed, but the main McKinley Ave. entrance will remain open.

Always use caution when driving on MetroParks roads as many of these roads are also used by pedestrians and bicyclists. Pedestrians and bicyclists should be reminded to also use caution and be aware of vehicular traffic when on these roads. Mill Creek Par-3 Golf Course to be Part of Junior Series

Area junior golfers will compete in an interleague competition at three Par-3 Golf Courses.  Teams will consist of 10 co-ed golfers between the ages of seven to 12 with six players participating at each team match.  Each team match will be a 9-hole event with two juniors playing a scramble format. Outcomes will be based off a point system for each team match.

A tournament schedule of home & away matches will be conducted over the summer months with a season finale cook-out to be held on July 30, 2016 at Mill Creek MetroParks Par-3.

Participating courses include Parto’s Golf Course in Youngstown, Whispering Pines Golf Course in Columbiana, and Mill Creek MetroParks in Youngstown. The cost for a junior golfer is $79.99 which includes their greens fees, team shirt, year-end cook-out, and prizes and trophies.
